Cervical Screening
Cervical screening (previously known as a Pap smear) is recommended for individuals aged 25-74 years. This screening detects HPV, a cause of cervical cancer, which can be effectively managed if found early. Check with your GP at your next appointment to ensure you are up to date with your screenings.
Bowel Cancer Screening
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in Australians. Screening can detect early signs of bowel cancer when treatment is most effective. From the age of 50-74, you will receive a bowel cancer screening kit every two years. This simple at-home test could save your life – don’t ignore it! If you experience symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, blood in your stool, abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss, see your GP urgently for further testing. If you have a family history of bowel cancer, discuss your risk with your GP to determine the best screening plan for you.
Mammographic Screening
Mammographic screening at BreastScreen SA is recommended for individuals aged 50-74 to detect early signs of breast cancer. You may choose to start screening from the age of 40. If you notice symptoms such as a lump, skin changes, or nipple discharge, see your GP immediately. If you have a family history of breast cancer, discuss your screening options with your GP to determine the best approach for your situation.
Osteoporosis Screening
Osteoporosis, or low bone density, increases the risk of fractures, which can be particularly serious as you age. Certain health conditions, such as coeliac disease, kidney problems, or early menopause, can increase your risk. Adequate vitamin D, dietary calcium, and weight-bearing exercise can help reduce your risk. Your GP can assess your risk and may recommend a bone density scan if needed.
Health Assessments
Regular health assessments are essential for maintaining your well-being and managing chronic conditions. Your GP can provide tailored advice and care plans to help you stay healthy at every stage of life.
Chronic Disease Management (Care Plans)
If you have a long-term health condition, such as asthma, diabetes, heart failure, or osteoporosis, your GP can help you manage your symptoms and prevent complications. Chronic disease management plans are designed to reduce hospital admissions and improve your quality of life. Your GP will work with specialists and practice nurses to create a personalised care plan, including regular check-ups and medication reviews.
Mental Health Care
Mental health issues are common and can affect anyone at any time. Your GP can help you develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs, which may include lifestyle changes, psychological strategies, or medication. Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS) are evidence-based therapies available under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). These sessions can help you develop coping strategies and improve your mental well-being.
Lifestyle and Stress Management
Managing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are key to preventing chronic diseases and improving mental health. Your GP can provide advice on diet, exercise, sleep, and stress reduction techniques to help you feel your best.
ATSI Health Assessment
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) health assessments are available to support the unique health needs of Indigenous Australians. These assessments focus on early detection and prevention of chronic diseases, as well as promoting overall well-being
Healthy Heart Check
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in Australia. Your GP can assess your heart health by checking your blood pressure, cholesterol, and family history. They can also provide advice on reducing your risk through lifestyle changes. This check is important for both men and women.
Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels. If you have a family history of diabetes or are aged 40-49, your GP can assess your risk and recommend lifestyle changes to prevent or manage the condition.
45-49 Year Health Assessment
This assessment is designed to identify early signs of chronic diseases and provide preventive care for individuals in this age group. Your GP will review your medical history, lifestyle, and risk factors to create a personalised health plan.
75+ Year Health Assessment
For patients aged 75 and over, this comprehensive assessment focuses on physical, psychological, and social well-being. The goal is to minimise health risks and improve quality of life by addressing mobility, cognition, mood, and social function.
4 Year Old Child Health Assessment
Regular health checks are important for children to ensure they are growing and developing as expected. This assessment includes a review of physical, emotional, and social development, as well as vaccinations and nutritional advice.
Weight Management and Body Scale Analysis
Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Your GP can provide guidance on diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Body scale analysis can also help track your progress and identify areas for improvement.
