Full Skin Cancer Checks
A full skin check involves a thorough examination of your skin from head to toe, including areas not typically exposed to the sun. Our GPs are trained to identify suspicious moles, spots, or lesions that may require further investigation. Regular skin checks are especially important if:
- You have a history of skin cancer.
- You have fair skin or a family history of skin cancer.
- You’ve had significant sun exposure or sunburns in the past.
What to Expect:
- No Makeup or Nail Polish: To ensure no lesions are missed, please come to your appointment without makeup or nail polish.
- Full-Body Examination: Your GP will check your entire body, including hard-to-see areas like your scalp, back, and soles of your feet.
- Personalised Advice: Tips on sun protection and how often you should have skin checks based on your risk factors.
Skin Spot Checks
If you’ve noticed a new or changing mole, spot, or lesion, don’t wait – book a skin spot check with your GP. Early detection is key to successful treatment. Use the ABCDEFG algorithm to identify warning signs:
- Asymmetry: One half of the mole looks different from the other.
- Border irregularity: Edges are uneven or blurred.
- Colour: The mole has multiple colours or changes in colour.
- Different: The mole stands out from others on your skin.
- Evolving/Elevated: The mole is changing in size, shape, or texture.
- Firm: The mole feels hard or lumpy.
- Growing: The mole is increasing in size.
Other signs of skin cancer include sores that won’t heal, bleeding, or itching.
Skin Excisions
If a suspicious lesion is identified during your skin check, your GP may recommend a skin excision. This minor procedure involves removing the lesion under local anaesthetic and sending it to a lab for further testing. Our GPs are experienced in performing skin excisions with minimal discomfort and scarring.
Why Are Skin Checks Important?
- Early Detection: Skin cancer, including melanoma, is highly treatable when caught early.
- Peace of Mind: Regular checks can help you feel confident about your skin health.
- Prevention: Your GP can provide personalised advice on sun protection and reducing your risk of skin cancer.
Who Should Have Regular Skin Checks?
- Anyone with a history of skin cancer.
- Individuals with fair skin, freckles, or a family history of skin cancer.
- People who have had significant sun exposure or sunburns.
- Those with new or changing moles, spots, or lesions.
